Chaffee Lake Amateur Radio Association is inviting members and prospective members to take part in the Colorado Simulated Emergency Test on Saturday, October 24. The statewide exercise is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to noon and will be CLARA’s October activity in place of its regular monthly meeting.
Participants may begin from home or mobile by checking into the W0LSD repeater, which transmits on 146.745 MHz with a minus 600 kHz offset and a 100 Hz tone. The plan then calls for operators to move to CLARA tactical simplex channels and, as appropriate, to the Chaffee County Emergency Operations Center in Salida for NVIS communications with Lake County and state reporting.
The exercise is designed to test practical emergency-communications work rather than simply count check-ins. CLARA says the scenario will use short, pre-distributed situational-awareness messages covering conditions such as snow depth, cellular-service status, and power status. Its objectives include putting at least eight individual stations on the air, practicing Level 1 net-control procedures, logging field-station reports, and identifying interoperability gaps for an after-action report.
For Arkansas Valley operators, the SET is a nearby chance to practice the progression from repeater coordination to simplex and HF NVIS traffic under a shared scenario. CLARA asks those planning to participate to RSVP by October 19; operators may also decide that morning to check in with an HT.
