WeatherXM D2 Mesh Brings Solar Weather Sensing to LoRa Meshes

WeatherXM has unveiled the D2 Mesh, a solar-powered, off-grid weather-station kit designed to send local readings over LoRa using Meshtastic or MeshCore rather than Wi-Fi or a cellular plan. Mesh America reports that one firmware build can also use WeatherXM’s own LoRa transport, with the active protocol selected at runtime without rebuilding or reflashing the device.

The sensor package measures temperature, humidity, pressure, rainfall, wind speed and direction, gusts, light, solar radiation, and UV. Its hardware includes an nRF5340 dual-core microcontroller, SX1262 LoRa radio, 16 MB of external flash, and a u-blox MAX-M10S GNSS receiver. An accelerometer and gyroscope are intended to identify tilt, movement, tampering, or relocation. A 6.5-volt, 60-mA solar panel, batteries, and supercapacitor support unattended operation.

A companion gateway uses an ESP32-S3, another SX1262 radio, a four-inch display, and microSD storage. It offers local MQTT and REST interfaces for self-hosted tools such as Home Assistant; WeatherXM cloud connectivity is optional. Reporting is designed to adapt from hourly updates in stable conditions to five-minute reports as weather changes.

WeatherXM has not announced a price or delivery date. It says it plans to publish schematics, a bill of materials, packet details, integration examples, and firmware source ahead of a Crowd Supply campaign.
