Recruiting New Amateur Operators: Lessons From Hacker Conferences

Michigan instructor Dan Romanchik, KB6NU, reports that his ARDC-supported one-day Technician classes reached two large cybersecurity gatherings this month. At DEF CON in Las Vegas, 66 attendees took part; 50 ultimately passed the Technician examination. His two-session class at New York’s HOPE conference also produced successful examinees.

The report is a useful local example of amateur radio reaching technically curious newcomers where they already gather. For AVRC license instructors, VE teams, and mentors, the account highlights the practical work behind outreach: matching a class format to a venue, revising material for the current question pool, and providing a path from introductory instruction to an exam session.
